Presidential Decree Issued to Replace Syrian Currency and Remove Two Zeros
Details of Presidential Decree No.
293 of 2025
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has issued Legislative Decree No.
293 of 2025, mandating the replacement of the current Syrian Currency with new banknotes starting January 1, 2026.
This strategic move aims to restructure the nation's monetary system by gradually withdrawing old banknotes from circulation.
The Central Bank of Syria will oversee the transition, providing specific timelines and centers to ensure a stable financial shift for all citizens.
Mechanism for Removing Zeros and New Nominal Value
The monetary reform involves removing two zeros from the currency’s face value.
According to the decree, every 100 old units will be equal to one unit of the new Syrian Currency.
Furthermore, the "Qirsh" has been reintroduced as the smallest monetary unit, with 100 Qirsh making up one New Syrian Lira.
This redenomination is intended to simplify accounting processes and manage the psychological impact of large nominal figures in daily transactions.
Transition Period and Legal Tender Regulations
To maintain market stability, both the old and new versions of the Syrian Currency will circulate simultaneously as legal tender during a specified transition period.
Once this period expires, the old banknotes will lose their legal status and become invalid for financial transactions.
Importantly, the decree emphasizes that the currency exchange process will be free of any taxes, fees, or commissions, ensuring a smooth transition into the updated monetary framework.
